Detailed Narrative Description of Project:

This project is undertaken by the Department of Forest, funded by ADB. The objectives of the project are:

To enhance conservation of forests in selected protected areas, increase overall wood production, and institute sustainable management of forest resources through local community participation, institutional strengthening and policy reform.

Other actin oriented objectives are:

-          To continue the expansion and extension of the successful models of participatory forestation and rehabilitation of degraded forests and other under-utilized government lands by addressing the resources constraints confronting the Forest Department at present;

-          Benefit from the enhanced capacity of the Forest Department and the NGO's delivery mechanisms and a better appreciation and awareness of the environment in the country;

-          Institutionalize community participation in forest management thereby increasing the overall wood production and contributing to forest conservation, and

-          Ensure conservation and sustainability of forest resources leading to a better environment for the present and future generations.

Detailed Description of Actual Services Provided by the Company:

-          evaluation of the socio-economic situation and the resource and agroclimatic conditions in the subproject areas, with the objective of designing appropriate approaches to increasing land productivity through intensified agricultural practices without compromising the long-term productive potential of the land base

-          based on the socio-economic and agroclimatic situation analysis, prepare appropriate models and schemes for cultivation of crops at various locations in the subproject areas, providing specific details about site suitability and cultivation practices, including harvesting and post-harvest care

-          prepare appropriate cropping schemes for selected sites and slope classes, including specific programs for CHT using Sloping Agricultural Land Technology (SALT) determining the most appropriate sites for application of the proposed schemes

-          design and apply extension packages to improve village-level agricultural systems within the forest areas, given existing rainfall patterns and other agroclimatic conditions:

-          assist the implementation of SASEP in applying and field-testing its agricultural development component at the selected sites; and provide advice and assistance to prepare of feasibility studies for the additional subprojects and report accordingly

-          Assist FD in all types of land survey including preparation of methodology for survey, inventory and mapping for planning and management purpose. Responsible to prepare all maps required for the project. Provide assistance in preparation of feasibly studies.

-          Evaluate the existing RIMS and MIS of the FD. Assist in all aspect of GIS based analysis, design and implementation. Provide on the job training in GIS and other aspects of CMIMU. Assist the FD in operationalization of the CMIMU through a computerized system

-          Conduct GPS survey to locate forest offices e.g. Forest Division, Range, Beat offices under Dhaka, Mymensingh and Tangail Forest Division and plot onto the vegetation maps

-          Examining and proposing revisions (as necessary) to the Forest (Amendment) Act, 2000-08-11. Framing appropriate rules under the Forest Act, 1927. Preparing a draft resolution for creation of the Sundarban Stewardship Commission. Examining and proposing revisions to the draft documents for formation and operation of Tree Farming Funds. Examining and proposing revisions to the draft Participatory Benefits Sharing Agreements (PBSA). Examining and proposing revisions to the draft Memorandum of Understanding (MOUs) with land owning agencies.
